For Immediate Release

Fundamental Skills Workshop 18th February 2018, Loughborough University, High Performance Athletics Centre

Teaching skills for activity and skills for life.

This is a workshop for limb impaired children and amputees aged 5-18 who have an activity limb or would like to be more active. The aim is to teaching children how to make the most of their prosthetic limbs to aid their participation in physical activity and sport, both in school and in the community.

Children with amputations and limb impairments are often excluded from school and community activities through social, physical and psychological barriers. These workshops are designed to support children and their families in overcoming the physical and psychological barriers through:

  • Developing skills to help children take part in school PE
  • Teaching children how to use their prosthetic for activity in a fun and relaxed environment
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Hosting workshops for parents to discuss how they can support their children

The Fundamental Skills programme has six ability levels focusing on key skills including; throwing, catching, kicking, running, jumping and skipping. Each child will receive a Fundamental Skills badge and certificate. All exercises are adapted for amputees and children with limb difference by our team of coaches from Eclectic Coaching and with input from Roehampton University and British Athletics.

‘We attended the first event in Manchester ...and I cannot praise this event highly enough! It has helped my daughter - above knee amputee so much...in physical and psychological terms. The coaching was excellent; supportive, encouraging and empowering. I am so glad we made the effort to attend the first event, even though it was a distance to travel it definitely worth it. Additionally, I would also say it is so lovely for parents and carers to be able to catch up and discuss how we support our limb different children’.

The next event takes place on Sunday 28th February between 10.00am and 4.00pm at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre, North Parade Road, Bath, BA2 4ET.
