Simon Heaps Shines at World AbilitySport Games in Thailand

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding success of wheelchair table tennis player Simon Heaps at the recent World AbilitySport Games held in Thailand. Despite facing numerous challenges, Simon showcased incredible resilience and skill, earning a well-deserved bronze medal in his category.

Simon's journey is one of inspiration and determination. After losing his right leg in 2019 and his left leg in 2022, Simon continued to compete in wheelchair table tennis, defying all odds. At 68 years old, he is the oldest player at his level and has consistently defeated opponents both younger and higher-ranked than him.

The World AbilitySport Games, held from 1st to 9th December in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, brought together 47 countries and approximately 1500 disabled athletes across 11 sports. Simon represented Great Britain as the sole participant in the Wheelchair Class 5 Table Tennis category, without a coach or practice partners. His achievement is even more remarkable considering the lack of support and self-funding required to participate.

In his group stage matches, Simon defeated players from Korea and Macau China, only losing to the eventual winner and the world's second-ranked player from China. In the quarter-finals, he secured a victory against a Thai player, ranked just below him, with a convincing 3-0 score. Simon faced tough competition in the semi-finals against the Indonesian player and world number 12, Hardianto. Although he lost the match after a hard-fought battle, he proudly claimed the bronze medal.

Simon's remarkable performance serves as an inspiration to athletes worldwide, demonstrating that age and adversity are no barriers to success. His motto, "Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it," truly reflects his unwavering determination and tenacity.

LimbPower, a charitable organisation, generously funded Simon's entry fee in the World Ability Games. Looking ahead, we are committing to supporting five athletes next year, continuing our mission to empower individuals with physical disabilities through sports.
